FAQ

What is “Kangaroo”?

It is an international mathematics competition that is held simultaneously in many countries around the world.

Who Can Participate in the Competition?

Any student from 2nd to 12th grade who has paid the organization fee of 2 EUR can participate in the “Kangaroo” competition. Results are compiled separately for each grade level.

Where Will the Competition Take Place?

At your school – if it has registered for the “Kangaroo” competition.

How Does the Competition Work?

This competition is a kind of game. Participants receive 30 tasks (24 tasks for grades 2-4), each with 5 answer options, but only one answer is correct. On a special form or on the task sheet, the participant must mark the correct answer without explanations. Textbooks and calculators are not allowed. The competition lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.

How are the Competition Results Compiled?

The answer sheets are checked and compiled by the Latvian organizing committee in Riga. Results are compiled separately by grade. Approximately one month after the competition day, each school that participated in the competition will receive a final report with the results of all participants from that school. This report will indicate not only the total scores obtained by the participants but also each participant’s ranking in their grade level.

How are the Winners Rewarded?

All competition participants, without exception, receive gifts and electronic certificates indicating their scores. Diplomas and gifts are also awarded to students who are among Latvia’s top twenty mathematicians in each grade level from 2nd to 12th grade (TOP 20).

How to Properly Organize the Competition at School?

Teachers organizing the competition at school should familiarize students with the game rules.

The Latvian organizing committee provides competition materials via the internet on the day of the competition. You need to print materials for each student. A student may register for the competition even on the day of the competition, but in this case, the application will be accepted if the school has spare materials. Allow 10 minutes before the start of the competition for participants to familiarize themselves with the game rules and how to fill out the answer sheets;

Seat students in a way that prevents them from copying, for example, 5th grade with 7th, 6th with 8th, etc. (the correctness of the competition depends on its authority and the accuracy of the results);

Each competition participant is given tasks corresponding to their age group. Students mark their answers on the task sheets, but they may use answer forms. From this moment, the competition time starts: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

How to Find out about the Competition Results?

To find out the competition results, you need to contact the school organizer.

All competition participants, without exception, receive small gifts and certificates (in electronic format) indicating the points obtained. These certificates are printed by the school organizer and will be presented at the school. From May 5 to May 31, small gifts for each participant, diplomas, and presents for students who are in the top twenty best mathematicians in Latvia for each grade from 2nd to 12th (TOP 20) will be sent to the schools.
